Can you imagine a hot summer day without a fan or air-conditioning? How about being on a tropical island with mosquitoes and no fan? Can you imagine running a business without internet and with the power turning off for 4 to 6 hours of the day?

The people living on St Thomas, St John, and Water Island can tell you all about trying to run a business and lead a normal life without power. See what the islanders are saying HERE.

Can you image...
I found a message in a bottle washed up on the beach?
Just like in the movies!!!
I was so excited to find it I had to bring it home and open it up to see what the note said.  I was expecting the note to say something about being stranded on island and I started to wonder what would make a person write a message in a bottle if they weren’t stranded on an island.
What would your message say?

I blame it all on the weather.
I’m having one of those weeks where I keep giving myself a little pep talk. Do you ever have those days where you’re so exhausted it feels as though your whole world is about to end because of one little annoyance?  My little annoyance is growing by the bite; it’s a very fast and fat mosquito.

It’s been raining a lot on St John the last couple of weeks, which has created pretty flowers and pestering mosquitoes. I’m ready for the sun to come out and shine.

Maybe we should all do a little dance at the same time?

Last night I opened a yummy bottle of wine from Maison Louis Latour located in Burgundy France, called “Macon-Lugny Les Genievres 2009.” Before I lived in the Caribbean I never drank white wine and now that I live in a warm climate I’m always looking for a white wine that I like. I’ve decided to start a list of white wines that I enjoy and this is the first one that I’m adding to my list.
St John has a great wine shop called Starfish Gourmet and Wines that is located in the Starfish Market in Cruz Bay.
Enjoy!

Can you imagine waking up to this view every morning?
Well, Eric’s father does; I find this view both inspiring and distractingly breathtaking. This view is from Mountain Top on St Thomas of Magen’s Bay.

In this photograph you can see St. John; it’s the island that has a bunch of houses on only one side because most of the island is national park (that’s where I live.)

Today I’m working in the office on St. John doing taxes, marketing, and emails.

Here are a few things that I wish I was doing instead:

1. Getting a massage at Drift Away Spa
2. Reading a magazine on one of St John's worlds most beautiful beaches.
3. Doing a day sail with Captain Phil on the Wayward Sailor.
4. It would even be nice to be at the airport, departing on an amazing adventure.

For your next vacation on St John how about staying at Concordia in an Eco Tent?
Before I lived on St John, Concordia was my favorite weekend getaway destination; I always referred to it as ‘luxury camping.’ Concordia is truly an amazing experience, not just another vacation hotel or island getaway. Located on St John’s southeast side of the island, posed on the side of a windy mountain, with an amazing view of the ocean, you can’t help but feel relaxed here. Each eco tent has it’s own solar panel, composting toilet, kitchen, and solar heated shower, that sleep up to 6 adults. The tents do not have a TV, phone, outlets, and most likely your cellphone will not even get a signal, trust me it feels great to disconnect.

If you do decide to leave your eco tent and explore the area there are some amazing sights that you can walk to from the property: Salt Pond Bay Beach, Salt Pond, Drunk Bay, and Ram Head Trail.
Please say “HI!!!” to Claudia for me, if you stay at Concordia.

In this photograph you can see the solar panel in front of the porch and the cistern water system underneath.

In this photo you can see the black barrel that heats the water for a shower.

In this photograph you can see all the new construction that has taken place at Concordia, view from Salt Bay.

    St John’s Sea Salt

St John’s Salt Pond is located on the southeast side of the island and is the only point on the island that is below sea level. During the summer months the locals harvest salt from the pond that forms around the edges. The water gets into the pond by seeping under the ground from the ocean; with the combination of heat and strong easterly trade winds the water evaporates to create a healthy source of sea salt. The sea salt has a great flavor and is full of natural minerals. People also love to cover themselves in the black mud found at the bottom of the pond for a mud bath.

This funny little cactus is originally from Brazil and has spread throughout the more arid Caribbean Islands. The long phallic flowers actually produce an edible fruit that tastes like a mild strawberry (see photo below.) The trick is to wait until the pink little fruit is almost popping out of the flower, then it will be ripe and sweet.

My favorite place on St. John to have breakfast at on the weekend is the Donkey Diner. The Donkey Diner is a little ‘mom and pop’ restaurant located in Coral Bay across from the Guy Benjamin Elementary School. They have a nice relaxed atmosphere with the local newspaper always available, book exchange shelf, games, colorfully painted picnic tables, and there is always a show of wild creatures in the backyard of chickens, goats, or donkeys. Both the tourists and the locals come here to eat. This last Sunday I had the oh so yummy Coffee n’ Hash Special and Eric had the Eggs Benedict Special.

During season the Donkey Diner is open everyday for breakfast. I recommend calling them if it is off season at 340 693 5240 or visiting their website at http://www.donkeydiner.com/
