Vieques Vacation

Vieques is the perfect small island getaway in the Caribbean: beautiful beaches, good food, nice people, convenient location, and relaxing. The island isn’t crowed or over commercialized so you can really relax and enjoy your tropical vacation experience. Here is a small list of our favorite things we did while we where vacationing on Vieques.

Flying to Vieques

Vieques is pronounced “bjekes” and located 8 miles east of Puerto Rico. It is known internationally for being a bombing range and testing ground for the US Navy until the people of Vieques said enough is enough and effectively protested the US Navy off the island in 2003. It is also known to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean and has the world’s largest and brightest Bioluminescent Bay.

We had an amazing time on Vieques and made a lot of photographs during my visit that I will post over the next week or so.

Let’s start at the beginning of our trip to Vieques with getting there. We flew from St Thomas via Seaborne Airlines on a 17-passenger airplane (see photos above.) The flight was surprisingly smooth and everything was on time. There are a handful of other airlines that also fly into Vieques and flying is your best bet with getting to the island. There is also a very inexpensive (inexpensive as in less then $5) ferry from Puerto Rico, but everyone says that it is unreliable due to not running regularly because it fails to pass inspection.

Once you’re on Vieques hop on a públicos (public cab) located right outside the airport, make sure to negotiate the fare before driving off to your hotel or car rental. We had 4 people in our públicos and it was $5 a person. We found that most people spoke English and Spanish.

Wish I Was Wednesday

Spanish Virgin Islands 
This is a wish that is in the works of coming true.
Eric and I are planning a weekend getaway to Vieques in June. Vieques is located east of Puerto Rico and one on the Spanish Virgin Islands.


Vieques is a small little island, about 134 square miles, so we thought it would be easy to pick a place to stay. Well, the more research we did, the more options we realized we had for accommodations on Vieques. There is one major and well-known hotel on the island, The W, a few smaller hotels, a good number of B and B’s, and an endless number of private homes (also known as villas) with prices ranging from $80 to $450 a night.

Vieques Vacation Accommodations

While we where visiting Vieques we stayed at the Malecón House in Esperanza. I cannot say enough good things about our stay at the Malecón House; we will defiantly be staying there when we return to Vieques.

The Malecón House is a 10 bedroom inn, own and operated by Robin and Marsha Shepherd, they where extremely helpful with our stay and happy to provide recommendations of the best the island has to offer. They served fresh baked muffins/scones, fresh fruit, and coffee every morning to get us started for our day. The rooms where immaculately clean, included fresh beach towels everyday, comfortable, quiet, with a fabulous hot shower, and lovely air-conditioning. The grounds of the inn where perfect, beautifully landscaped, provided parking for our jeep rental, and the best part was the pool. Originally we didn’t think we would use the pool because we planned on going to the beach, but we found ourselves relaxing poolside everyday. The Malecón House is located right in town making it easy to walk around Esperanza as well as to the beach. I even purchased a couple organic cotton dresses from the boutique that are amazing.

We give the Malecón House 5 stars and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Vieques. See what others are saying on TripAdvisor.

One of the best places to eat on Vieques

I never thought I would love food from a truck but my mouth waters every time I think about my lunch at Sol Food. I ate the Caribbean Pulled Pork Sandwich with a Pinchos Skewered Spanish Shrimp on the side – amazing!!! Sol Food is on your way to all of the popular beaches on Vieques, so you never have to pack a lunch for the beach while on vacation. Please visit Sol Food’s website HERE. Tripadvisor has them rated as #2 restaurants in Isla de Vieques, yes they're that good!!! We also loved Bili Restaurant for dinner, check them out on Yelp HERE.

Looking back at 2011

I really enjoyed 2011 and I'm looking forward to 2012. Last year was my first full year of blogging on Sage Island; it's been a lot of fun! I've enjoyed sharing my photos, travels, and getting inspiration from other bloggers. Let's take a quick look back over the past year...


I went to the beach a lot: Gibney Beach, Drunk Bay Beach, Francis Beach, Red Beach, and Megan's Beach to name a few. 


Eric and I did a bit of traveling last year, we had a Vieques Weekend, Dominica Vacation,  Maine with the family,  and another weekend getaway at Old San Juan...


.... and I did a lot of daydreaming about traveling to places like here, spending a weekend in this villa, or at this hotel, and on a boat for a week.


Had a lot of fun playing on St John on the Hobie Cat, kayaking guided tour, visiting Josephine's organic garden, eating at the Donkey Diner, went on a bunch of hikes, and my favorite was doing a sunset sail on Sail Pepper.


I had some experiences this year that are now on my list of "best thing I have ever done" like hiking to The Boiling Lake on Dominica, soaking after at Screw's Sulfur Spa, photographing Papillote's tropical garden, swimming in the world's best Bioluminescent Bay on Vieques, and watching the sunset with Eric on the beach.


Found inspiration from artist like Naoto Hattori, Banksy, Eugene Atget, street art, and more. 


There's still so much that I would like to do with this blog to make it grow over the next year. More than anything I'm so excited and grateful that people are reading, visiting, and sharing inspiration here on Sage Island - Thank you Friends!!!!

Flying a Kite!

I have a terrible memory for random details. The two people that I adore the most have an amazing memory for random details, which I admire. One of those random details happens to be a kite that my mother gave to Eric on his birthday.

Wild Horses.

On Vieques horses run free and are wild - makes me think of the Wild West. Most of the horses where really shy about having their photo taken and the ones that weren't shy scared me. I'm not sure what it is about horses, I love them and want to get close but I find them unpredictable and horses are smart they sense this and want nothing to do with me.
